Planet Saturn Facts and information

Saturn is the sixth planet from the sun.  It is the second largest in our solar system .  I will explore Planet Saturn Facts in the article below.

About – Planet Saturn Facts

In Roman Mythology, Saturn is the god of agriculture.  The greek god Cronus is linked to Saturn and he was the son of Uranus and the father of Zeus.  Saturn is the root of the English word, Saturday.  Planet Saturn facts show that Saturn has been known since prehistoric times.  Galileo was the first to observe it with a telescope in 1610.  Early observations of Saturn was complicated by the fact that the earth passes through the plane of Saturn’s rings every few years as Saturn moves in its orbit.  Saturn is visibly flattened (oblate) when viewed through a small telescope.  This is the result of its rapid rotation and fluid state.

Least Dense Planets – Planet Saturn Facts

Planet Saturn Facts and information

Saturn is the least dense of the planets.  Planet Saturn Facts show that its specific gravity, 0.7 is less than that of water.  Saturn was first visited by NASA’s Pioneer 11 in 1979 and later by Voyager 1 and Voyager 2.  Cassini arrived on July 1st, 2004 and it orbited Saturn for about four years.  Saturn’s rings are extraordinarily thin, they are 250,000km or more in diameter they’re less than one kilometre thick.  Saturn’s outermost ring, the F-ring is a complex structure made up of several smaller knots which knots are visible.

Ring System – Planet Saturn Facts

Saturn has a prominent ring system that consists of nine continuous main rings.  There are tidal resonances between some of Saturn’s moons and the ring system, some of the moons, the ‘satellites’ eg, Atlas, Prometheus, and Pandora, are very important in keeping the rings in place.  Planet Saturn Facts reveal that the whole system is very complex and poorly understood.  Like the other jovian planets, Saturn has a significant magnetic field.  When it is in the nighttime sky, Saturn has a significant magnetic field.  It is not as bright as Jupiter, it is easy to identify as a planet because it doesn’t ‘twinkle’ like the stars do.  The rings and larger satellites are visible with a small astronomical telecope.

Saturn’s Satellites – Planet Saturn Facts

Saturn has 53 named Satellites, the three pairs of Mima-Tethys, Enceladus-Dione and Titan-Hyperion interact gravitationally in such a way as to maintain stable relationships between their orbits.  Some major moons include, Pan, Atlas, Prometheus, Pandora, Titan, Janus.   Some interesting Planet Saturn Facts show that Saturn’s interior is composed of iron, nickel and rock.  Surrounded by a deep layer of metallic hydrogen.  The planet exhibits a pale yellow hue.  Electrical current within the metallic hydrogen layer gives rise to Saturn’s planetary magnetic field.  Wind Speeds reach 1,100 mph on Saturn.

Gas Giant Planet – Planet Saturn Facts

Saturn is considered as a gas giant planet because the exterior is mainly composed of gas, and it lacks a definite surface.  Some Planet Saturn Facts include that the rotation of the planet causes it to take shape of an oblate spheroid.  That is, it is flattened at the poles and bulges at the equator.  Saturn’s core is denser than water.  Saturn is termed a gas giant, but it is not entirely gaseous.  The planet mainly consists of hydrogen. This transitions to metal due to the temperature and pressures.  Saturn has a very hot interior, reaching 11,700 degrees C at the core.  The planet radiates 2.5 times more energy into space than it receives from the sun.

Atmosphere – Planet Saturn Facts

Some interesting planet Saturn facts reveal that it has a similar pattern of atmosphere to Jupiter’s.  The 1990 storm was an example of a great white spot and the telescope picked up an enormous white cloud.  Another storm is due in 2020, according to the periodicity that is maintained.
