Skiing Alpe d’huez Le Tunnel – Where I Broke My Femur – One Of The Hardest Ski Runs In The Alps

Skiing Alpe d’huez Le Tunnel

The video shows the Alpe d’huez Le Tunnel in France where I broke my femur in my right leg when skiing.

Alpe d’huez Le Tunnel is one of the most difficult ski runs in the Alps. I skied the Alpe d’huez Le Tunnel and it got the better of me. The access to the Alpe d’huez Le Tunnel run is by a tunnel that goes through the top of a mountaing and brings you out on the other side where the  ski run begins.

The video below shows someone snowboarding the tunnel. If you watch it from about half way. Someone even demonstates how to fall properly and not break their leg.

The top is very steep with lots of big moguls. On the day that I did it the snow on the moguls was icy. I lost control at the top and slid down. As I slid I was accelerating and bouncing over the moguls. I wasn’t sure where I was sliding to and I was concerned that there may be a drop. I decided to attempt to stop myself by swivelling around on my back and trying to dig my skiis into the ground whist parallel and infront of me (difficult to describe). When my skis hit the ground they twisted and my right femur shattered with the twisting force – I had not considered the effect of the speed that I was sliding at the potential twisting moment that moguls would cause when my skis hit the ground. At this point I knew immediately that my femur was shattered. The problem was that I was still falling at quite a speed. Instinctively knew I had to protect the broken led so I put myself in fatal like position and clamped my broken leg against my good leg so it acted like splint. I continued to roll and slide. The pain was off the scale compared to anything I had ever experienced as I was knocked and I rolled in free fall down the mountain. Eventually I came to a stop.

I was kindly helped by a French man who called for help and stayed with me until the mountain rescue arrived. They attempted to ski me down the mountain in a stretcher – not the best feeling when you are strapped into what is essentially a sledge with a blanket in it and secured by a man infront of you and man behind sking with snow plough to hopefully stop you sliding downthe mountain. Unfortunately they didn’t have any pain killers and every movement was too painful. Eventually they stopped and called for a helicopter. The only problem was that the mountain was too steep where I was so they had to move me a flatter bit – which meant more pain. After what felt like forever waiting in the minus 10 degrees celcius the helicopter arrived and I was flown to the nearest hospital in Grenoble.

When this happened I was wearing a sports watch that monitored my heart rate. It peaked at 220 BPM during this incident. I was obviously a little bit distressed by the incident.
