Gorillas are generally quiet animals. They are very intelligent and can learn extremely complex tasks. They live in different parts of western Africa. Their life span is 35 years in the wild and 50 years in captivity. (They live much longer in captivity). They are not aggressive animals. They are shy, social animals and female gorillas groom their offspring. Mountain gorillas are on the verge of extinction. We must help save the gorillas from extinction. How can we do this? By raising awareness and fundraising. Gorilla populations are decreasing. There are roughly 50,000 gorillas left in the wild in Africa. There are only about 600 mountain gorillas. I love the endangered gorillas and many people do. Together, we can help save the mountain gorilla.
Endangered Gorillas – How You Can Help To Protect These Endangered Great Apes
Adult male gorillas (silverbacks) will care for weaned orphaned young gorillas.
Gorillas rarely drink water; the water contained in their diet is enough to sustain them. They are predominantly herbivores, eating mostly plant material. They eat leaves, fruit, seeds, tree bark and flowers.
The height of a male gorilla is 5.6ft and a female is 4.6 ft. Male gorillas are much larger than female gorillas.
Gorillas communicate with each other with complicated sounds and gestures. These include grunts, roars, growls and whine, chest-beating etc. Communication is used to teach the young the many skills they need to survive, about food, social relationships etc.
When Gorillas are mature, they go off and form another band. Gorillas cannot swim. Each evening gorillas construct a ‘nest’ for the night in which they will curl up and sleep. The bowl-shape nests are made up of leaves and other plant materials.
Grooming (cleaning the hair of another gorilla) is a major occupation for gorillas.
Gorilla Conservation Projects
Without the forest, the gorillas will not survive. Understanding this and protecting the forest is the first step in saving the endangered gorillas.
There are many conservation projects and all support is vital. Sir David Attenborough is to host a gala dinner in September at the Savoy Hotel in London in aid of the endangered gorillas. He is a key member of the Ape Alliance. Guests will be able to see ‘Last of the Great Apes’ in 3D, after dinner. With support like this one-off event, it raises awareness for the mountain gorilla and provides a valuable insight into how we can all help this endangered animal.
